Bulgaria shares a border with Turkey and Greece to the south, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Yugoslavia to the west, Romania to the north and the Black Sea to the east. The capital, Sofia, lies in the western region of the country. Bulgaria’s relationship with its neighbors has generally been good. Bulgaria has proven to be a constructive force in the region and has played an important role in promoting regional security. The U.S. signed a Bilateral Investment Treaty in 1994 and later gave Bulgaria most-favored-nation trade status in October 1996
